A wet basement is decided before the concrete is poured
Basements almost never leak because of bad concrete. They leak because water was allowed to reach the wall, and that gets settled during the dig — how deep and how wide the hole is cut, what the footing drain sits in, what goes back against the wall, and how the ground is shaped when the machines leave. Once the finished basement smells damp, every cheap fix is buried under eight feet of backfill.
Read the ground before the bucket touches it
Montana ground changes across a single lot. In Paradise Valley you can open a hole in clean river cobble that drains like a colander and hit heavy blue clay forty feet away. Test holes tell us three things that shape the whole job: what the soil is, whether groundwater shows up at basement depth, and how deep the rock is. A cobble-and-gravel lot is easy to drain but caves at a steeper angle, so the sides get laid back farther. Clay holds a wall beautifully and drains almost not at all, which means the wall needs a real drainage envelope, not just soil pushed back in.
Frost depth matters here too. Footings go below frost, and in the upper valley that is deeper than most people coming from out of state expect, so the hole is bigger than they pictured.
The dig, in the order it happens
Topsoil is stripped and stockpiled first — it is the material you want back on the finished grade, and it is exactly the material you do not want against the foundation. Then the basement excavation is cut to grade, with the bottom left flat and undisturbed rather than dug low and filled back with loose dirt. Overexcavating and refilling under a footing is a settlement crack waiting to happen.
The over-dig around the footprint gives the foundation crew working room to set forms, strip them, and damp-proof the outside of the wall. Once the wall is up, the footing drain goes in below the top of the footing, bedded and covered in washed rock, wrapped in filter fabric so silt does not plug it, and run to daylight if the site has any fall at all. A drain with no outlet is a bathtub.
The drainage envelope is the actual product
The system that keeps a basement dry is three pieces working together, and any one of them missing sinks the other two: a perimeter drain that intercepts water at the footing, free-draining material against the wall so water goes down to that drain instead of sitting, and a finished grade that sheds surface water away from the house before it ever soaks in. This is the same thinking behind every culvert and ditch we build — the principles in our rural drainage guide apply to a building the same way they apply to a road. Where a site has an uphill slope feeding the house, an interceptor drainage solution upslope of the excavation does more good than anything you can do at the wall.

Backfill is where good digs go wrong
Backfill placed in lifts and compacted is a permanent grade. Backfill pushed in and left settles for years, and every inch it drops creates a trench around the house that catches roof runoff and snowmelt and holds it against the wall — the exact condition the drain was installed to prevent. The compaction principles that make a driveway last are what make a perimeter grade hold. Big frozen chunks, wet clay, and construction debris all belong somewhere other than against a new foundation. Finish with final grading that carries a clear fall away from the house on every side before anyone starts landscaping over it.
What moves the scope
Depth and wall height drive volume, and volume drives everything else. Rock changes the method and the pace. Groundwater adds dewatering and a more serious drainage design. Access matters more than most people expect — a tight lot with no room to stockpile means hauling spoil off and hauling backfill back in, two truck operations where a roomier site has none. And a site with no downhill outlet for the footing drain has to solve that problem some other way, which is worth knowing before design, not after.
