The window for driveway work in Paradise Valley closes faster than most people expect. Once frost sets a few inches into the ground, a grader blade skips instead of cutting, fresh gravel will not key into the surface, and a compactor just bounces. Whatever condition your driveway is in when the ground locks up is the condition it holds until thaw. Fall maintenance is about choosing that condition on purpose.
Start with water, not gravel
The instinct is to order a load of gravel first. That is backwards. Nearly every gravel driveway failure we dig into traces back to water that had nowhere to go, and material laid over a wet spot only buys a few months.
Walk the driveway during or right after a rain and watch where water actually travels. It should shed off the crown to both sides, into ditches that carry it away, through culverts set low enough to pass the flow. What you do not want is water running down the driveway itself, standing in wheel ruts, or pooling against the uphill shoulder. Any of those freeze into a plate of ice, and then freeze-thaw goes to work: water gets into the surface, expands, lifts material loose, and the next thaw carries it downhill.
Culverts deserve a real look, not a glance. Silt, beaver activity, and a summer of debris all shrink the effective opening. Rebuild the crown, then compact
A gravel driveway should sit higher in the middle than at the edges. Traffic flattens that crown over a season, and once it is flat, water sits instead of shedding. Regrading is not smoothing over potholes. A proper cut reaches below the bottom of the ruts, brings that material back up, and reshapes the whole cross section so it drains. Blading only the high spots leaves the pothole bottoms intact, and they reappear within weeks.
Compaction is the step people skip, and it decides how the surface handles a plow. Loose material gets pushed into windrows and thrown into the ditch. A compacted surface lets a blade shave snow off the top without peeling gravel with it. Fall works well for this because the ground usually carries enough natural moisture for material to lock up, where bone-dry August gravel never sets the same way. Material choice matters more in winter
If your driveway is thin or showing native soil, add material before winter rather than after, and what you add matters. Clean washed rock has no fines to bind it, so it stays loose, migrates under tires, and gets scattered by the first plow pass. Road mix for gravel driveways carries a graded range of sizes plus fines, which is why it packs into a surface that sheds water and holds up to a blade. A modest lift, graded and compacted, does more good than a deep dump of loose material. Deep and loose is how gravel ends up in the ditch by January.
What you can inspect yourself
- Ruts deeper than a couple of inches, or ruts that hold water after a rain
- A flat or reverse crown, where the center is level with or lower than the shoulders
- Culvert inlets and outlets obstructed by silt, brush, or ice from last spring
- Native soil or fabric showing through where gravel has worn thin
- Soft spots that stay soft days after everything else dries
- Driveway edges you cannot identify from a truck seat once snow covers them
- Brush and low limbs within reach of a plow truck or a mirror
Marking driveway edges with stakes tall enough to stay visible above drifts protects your shoulders, your culvert ends, and whoever is plowing. Shaded stretches under overhanging limbs also stay icy long after open ground clears, which is exactly where trouble starts on a grade.
Common mistakes
Filling potholes with loose gravel and driving on: without cutting the surrounding surface and compacting, the patch pops out in the first thaw. Grading during a dry spell, with no moisture to bind the material. Ignoring a soft spot because a load of rock hides it for a while. And waiting until a storm is in the forecast, by which point the ground may be too cold to work and every crew in the valley is switching to plow trucks.
What drives scope and timing
Length and width, but also how far the surface has drifted off crown, whether a usable base remains or the gravel has thinned to native soil, and how far material has to be hauled. Slope raises scope, since steep grades need more attention to shedding water and more care with material that wants to migrate. Drainage work is its own scope, separate from surface grading. Access matters too, since a narrow, tight-turning drive limits what equipment fits and how efficiently it works.
Frost depth ends the season, not the calendar, and it arrives earlier on shaded north slopes and up-valley than it does in Livingston.
Get on the schedule before the ground freezes
Fall driveway work also makes the winter easier. A well-shaped, compacted surface with clear edges plows faster and takes less damage, which shows up in every residential snow removal visit all season.
