Plenty of Montana projects stall before they start because the work is there and the equipment can’t get to it. A building site up a bench, timber that has to come out, a well or shop site at the back of a section — the road has to exist before anything else happens, and it has to carry loads the ground was never asked to carry. Cutting a two-track through with a blade gets a pickup in. It does not get a loaded end dump back out.
What a haul road actually has to carry
The design load isn’t your truck. It’s the heaviest thing that has to travel the route, times the number of trips. A concrete truck, a lowboy hauling an excavator, a log truck, a water truck — these concentrate a lot of weight on a few axles, and they do it repeatedly, in the same wheel tracks, often in the same week. That repetition is what breaks roads. One pass over soft ground leaves a rut; forty passes over that same rut pumps fines up through the surface and turns the whole section into a bog.
Three things make a road survive that. A compacted base thick enough to spread axle load out over the subgrade instead of punching into it. Drainage that keeps water moving off the running surface rather than sitting in it. And grades and corner radii the machines can physically negotiate loaded, which is a much tighter constraint than what they can do empty. The reasoning behind base depth, crown, and material choice is the same reasoning that governs any gravel road or private drive in Montana — access roads just push it harder.
Reading the ground before cutting a route
Route selection does more for a road’s durability than anything done afterward. Before any dirt moves, the route gets walked for the things that cause trouble later: where seeps and springs surface, where snowmelt concentrates in spring, which draws stay soft into June, where the soil turns to clay, and where rock is close enough to the surface to change the cost of a cut.
The straightest line is rarely the right one here. Sidehilling across a slope to hold grade usually beats running straight up it, because a steep pitch that a machine can climb dry becomes impassable the first time it rains and it becomes a channel that erodes the road every spring. Crossing a drainage at a narrow, firm spot with a properly sized culvert beats crossing it at the convenient spot and hoping. And a route that stays out of the wettest ground entirely is cheaper than one that has to be built up out of it.
How the work goes, in order
Clearing and grubbing comes first — brush, stumps, and organic topsoil stripped off the alignment, because organics under a road decompose and settle. Then rough cut and fill to establish grade and get the road bench in. Drainage structures go in next: culverts at every crossing and low point, ditches cut where water needs somewhere to go. Then subgrade prep and compaction, then base material placed in lifts and compacted, then shaping to crown so water sheds instead of ponding.
Skipping the compaction step is the most common shortcut and the most expensive one. Loose material looks like a road and behaves like gravel in a pile — compaction is what turns aggregate into structure, and no amount of added rock later makes up for a subgrade that was never densified.

Temporary, permanent, and what drives scope
Decide up front which you’re building. A temporary haul road can be rougher and narrower, but it still needs drainage and base, because a stuck truck costs more than the road would have. A permanent route to a building site or the back of a property justifies wider corners, better surfacing, and ditches shaped to last, and it becomes an asset instead of a scar. If it’s coming out, land reclamation after the work — ripping the compacted surface, recontouring, seeding — is what actually restores the ground.
Scope on this work is driven by length, how much cut and fill the terrain forces, how many drainage crossings the route requires, how far material has to be hauled to reach the site, and whether rock shows up in the cuts. Access for our own equipment matters too: a site we can reach easily builds faster than one where every load travels a long two-track.
