If your flagstone has tilted, your pavers rock underfoot, or the joints have opened into gaps you can catch a boot heel in, the stone is not the problem. Water got into the base, froze, and lifted it. That is the single failure mode behind nearly every hardscaping repair we get called on in Paradise Valley, and it is entirely preventable underground.
What freeze-thaw actually does under a patio
Water expands as it turns to ice. In a base that drains freely, there is not enough trapped water to matter. In a base built from fines, or one sitting in a bowl of clay with nowhere to shed, the moisture stays put through fall, freezes hard, and pushes the surface up. Then it thaws, the water leaves, and the surface settles back — but not evenly, and not all the way. Repeat that cycle through a valley winter, where we can swing above and below freezing repeatedly in the same week, and a flat patio becomes a wavy one.
The other half of the problem is spring. Snowmelt coming off a roof or down a slope has to go somewhere, and a patio is an impermeable lid sitting on the yard. If the grading sends that water under the edge of the stone instead of away from it, the base saturates every March whether or not the patio itself drains.
How the work goes, in order
Excavation comes first, and it goes deeper than most people expect. We strip topsoil and any organic material until we are on firm native ground, because organics rot, compress, and leave voids. What we find in that hole determines the rest — silty and clay-heavy ground calls for more base and sometimes a drain, while gravelly subgrade needs less.
Next is subgrade shaping. The bottom of the excavation gets pitched to drain, not left flat. Then the aggregate base goes in and gets compacted in lifts. Compaction in thin layers is what makes the difference between a base that carries load and one that settles in year two — the same principle covered in our piece on why compaction makes or breaks a Montana driveway, pad, or road.
On top of the compacted base comes the setting bed, then the stone, then edge restraint. Edge restraint is the piece homeowners tend to skip. Without something holding the perimeter, the outside course walks outward under freeze-thaw and traffic, the field spreads, and the joints open from the edges inward.

Where the water goes matters as much as the stone
A new patio changes how your property drains. Adding a few hundred square feet of hard surface next to a house can concentrate runoff exactly where you least want it. We set finished grade so the surface sheds away from structures and ties into whatever the property already has for drainage — and where a patio sits at the base of a slope or below a roofline, a French drain along the uphill edge intercepts water before it ever reaches the base. Flagstone or pavers
Flagstone reads natural and irregular, sits well against native rock, and pairs with boulder work and stone walls on sloped lots. Thickness and cut quality vary, so the setting takes more hand fitting. Pavers are uniform, come in set patterns, and — the practical advantage — individual units can be lifted and reset if a utility line ever has to come through or one corner settles. Neither one outlasts the other. The base decides that.
What drives scope and timing
Excavation depth is the biggest lever, and it is set by soil, not by preference. After that: access for equipment and material, how far spoils have to be hauled, slope and whether it needs terracing, the drainage work the site actually requires, and stone selection and cut complexity. A simple walkway on well-draining ground with good access is a modest job. A terraced patio on clay with a wall and a drain is a different scale of work.
Build in the frost-free months, when the ground is workable and the base can be compacted properly. Once it is in, keep the joints filled, keep gutters and downspouts discharging away from the edges, and skip the rock salt in favor of sand.
