A wall out here is land management, not decoration. What decides whether a wall stands in ten years isn’t the face you look at — it’s the base under it and the gravel and pipe behind it, which makes a wall excavation work as much as stonework.

Base, batter, and what’s behind the face
The base. The bottom of a wall gets excavated past topsoil and organics to firm, undisturbed ground, then rebuilt with a compacted pad of crushed rock. The first course sits buried — roughly a tenth of the wall’s height as a rule of thumb, never less than about six inches — so the toe can’t kick out or get undermined by erosion in front. A wall set on topsoil, or on spoil pushed back into the trench, is settling before the crew leaves.
The batter. Courses lean back into the hill rather than standing plumb — about an inch of setback per foot of height as a common minimum, more on taller or loaded walls. Batter buys margin: pressure moves the wall toward vertical instead of past it.
The backfill. Behind the face goes clean, angular drain rock — not the native clay from the hole — with a perforated drain line at its base and filter fabric between rock and soil so fines can’t migrate in and plug it. The drain has to daylight lower than the wall; a pipe ending inside the backfill just stores water.
Water is the load nobody budgets for
Saturated soil is far heavier than dry, and standing water behind a wall adds hydrostatic pressure on top of that. Then it freezes. Ice lensing through repeated freeze-thaw is the most common reason walls here lean and come apart, and runoff off the Absarokas is when it shows. A wall that looked fine in August tells the truth in April.
So drainage isn’t an add-on line item. It is the wall. Surface water counts too — ground above should carry runoff around the wall, not into the backfill, which can mean a swale uphill, a French drain, or moving a downspout that’s soaked that ground for years.
Where this goes wrong
- Backfilled with the dirt that came out of the hole. Clay behind a wall holds water against it. Drain rock is not optional fill.
- Drain pipe with no outlet. If it doesn’t daylight downhill or tie into a real drainage run, it stores water.
- No filter fabric. Fines wash into the drain rock over a few seasons and the gravel zone quits draining.
- Over-compacting at the face. Backfill goes in lifts, but heavy compaction against the wall pushes it out of line.
- Ignoring the surcharge. A driveway, parked equipment, or a slope climbing above all load the wall. One sized for bare yard won’t hold a driveway.
- Tiers stacked too close. Terraced walls set close enough that the upper loads the lower behave like one tall wall, not two short ones.
When a wall needs an engineer
Height isn’t the only trigger. A wall that’s tall, tiered, carrying a surcharge, or holding up a road or structure is in engineered-design territory, and taller reinforced walls often need geogrid layers reaching well back into the hillside — so the dig runs bigger than the face suggests. Where a permit applies, that application is the owner’s process with the county or relevant agency, and stream work goes through the local conservation district. We build to the approved design and coordinate with whoever draws it.
How we approach it
We walk the site first — slope above and below, soil, where water arrives and where it can go, and how equipment gets in. The sequence from there is the same: excavation of the base trench and any cut behind the wall, down to firm ground; a compacted leveling pad; the buried first course set true, because every course above copies it; the wall built up with batter, drain rock, fabric, and a daylighted drain line as it rises; backfill in compacted lifts, worked carefully near the face; then a low-permeability cap and grading so runoff goes around the wall. Slopes above or below tie in with erosion control, and where the wall exists to make flat ground, lot leveling happens on the same trip.
