When this matters
- Gullies cutting deeper across a slope, pasture, or bank each runoff season
- A streambank, pond edge, or ditch bank losing ground to moving water
- Washouts below culvert outlets, road edges, and driveway discharges
- A cut or fill slope from old construction or logging that never stabilized
- Bare ground around a new build that must hold until vegetation takes over
- A slope that sloughs each thaw and drops material onto a road
What Montana does to a bare slope
Freeze-thaw does more damage to slopes here than most single storms. Water in the top inches of soil freezes, expands, and lifts the surface crust; when it thaws, that loosened material sits with nothing binding it, ready to move with the first flow.
Then the melt arrives on frozen ground. In April the top foot may be thawed while the soil beneath is still solid, so meltwater cannot soak in and sheets across the surface. Ground that takes a hard August rain without a mark can shed nearly all of an April melt, which is why we size armor for runoff rather than average rainfall.
The soil does not help. The benches around Emigrant and Pray are alluvial fan material — sand, gravel, and cobble with little cohesion once the vegetation mat breaks — and the drainages toward Gardiner and Tom Miner run flashy, arriving all at once with debris.
Erosion control or drainage?
Usually both. Drainage work is about where water goes: collecting it, channeling it, getting it to daylight. Erosion control is about what water does to soil on the way. Standing water is a drainage problem; ground that is leaving is erosion — and the cure still starts with drainage.
Rock, seed, shape, and matting
Shape is the cheapest tool and the most underused. Erosion needs concentrated flow, so spreading water back across a wide path often beats rock. It also means laying a slope back to an angle it can hold: a bare cut steeper than roughly two horizontal to one vertical is hard to revegetate, while something nearer three-to-one holds soil and seed.
Rock goes where flow is concentrated and fast: culvert outlets, bank toes, spillways, steep ditch sections. Riprap works by mass and interlock: angular quarried rock rather than rounded river cobble, sized to the velocity it sees. It gets bedded on a granular layer over geotextile so fines cannot pump out from beneath it and keyed into a trench at the toe so it cannot unravel from the bottom.
Seed and topsoil do the long-term work on everything that is not a channel: topsoil respread, a regionally appropriate mix, and the slope track-walked so cleat marks run horizontally, catching seed and slowing sheet flow. Dormant fall seeding is common here — seed waits for spring moisture instead of germinating into a dry August.
Matting covers the gap until grass establishes: straw or coir blankets stapled in firm contact with the soil, seams shingled downslope. Laid loose over lumpy ground, water runs underneath and the blanket does nothing.
Where this goes wrong
- Undersized riprap. Rock that cannot resist the velocity relocates downstream and takes the bank with it.
- No filter layer. Riprap set straight on soil lets fines wash out through the voids until the rock settles in and covers nothing.
- The toe left unkeyed. Armor starting at the waterline gets undercut and fails from the bottom up.
- Armoring the symptom. Rock in the gully while the culvert still fires concentrated flow into the head of it is a delay, not a fix.
- Seeding with nothing over it. On any real pitch, seed with no mulch or matting is gone with the first runoff.
How we approach it
We read the water first: where it gathers, how fast it moves where it does damage, and where it drops what it carries. Then we work in that order. First the source — culvert outlets corrected and armored, ditches or swales cut above the slope to intercept hillside runoff before it reaches the failing ground. Next the shape: regrading gullies and slopes to stable angles, benching new fill into old ground instead of stacking it on the face. Then armor where it is genuinely needed — riprap sized and bedded at outlets, toes, and steep channels, boulder walls where a slope must be held in a footprint too tight to lay back. Last the cover: topsoil respread, track-walked into a firm seedbed, and matted where the pitch demands it, with the seeding itself done to your plan or coordinated with your reseeding contractor — the same finish work as our land reclamation projects. Where runoff already did damage, spring runoff repair and erosion control happen on one visit.
