A lot of ground in this valley sits across water — a creek off the Absarokas, an irrigation ditch, a draw that runs hard for three weeks in May. When this matters
- A pasture, building site, or back parcel is cut off by a creek, ditch, or draw
- The crossing has gone swaybacked and you slow to a crawl every time over it
- Log stringers or tie decking are checked, punky, or crushed at the bearings
- A pickup crosses fine, but a loaded truck or hay equipment has no way over
- The channel has moved and the water no longer runs under the middle
Bridge or culvert: reading the crossing first
The first question isn’t what the bridge looks like — it’s whether it should be a bridge at all. A properly sized culvert is cheaper and entirely adequate on plenty of seasonal draws and small ditches. What pushes a site toward a span is the channel: a defined bed and banks worth leaving alone, heavy or steady runoff, ice and woody debris that would plug a pipe, a wide shallow channel where an adequate pipe needs more cover than the approach grades allow, and live water where fish passage matters. A culvert constricts the channel; a bridge spans it, which usually means less work in the water and simpler permitting.
The second question is load. A crossing for a half-ton and a horse trailer is a different structure than one taking a loaded gravel truck or a tractor and full spreader. That number drives span, material, and abutment size, so it gets answered first.
What holds a crossing up, and what takes it out
On the old ranch bridges we get called out to look at, the deck is rarely the problem — it’s the ends. Abutments carry the whole structure and sit right where the water works. They have to bear on undisturbed ground below frost depth, set back far enough from the channel that a big-water year can’t undercut them, with the bank face beneath armored in rock sized to hold through a real spring.
Approaches are the other half. Fill placed against a rigid structure consolidates if it goes in loose — that’s the dip at each bridge end every rough crossing in this county has — so it goes in compacted lifts. The approach gets crowned and ditched too, so runoff coming down the road sheds off before the deck instead of soaking into the abutment backfill. Water traveling along a crossing rather than under it is what removes crossings.
Freeboard matters too. Spring melt moves ice, root wads, and fence wire, and a deck set close to the water becomes a debris rack. Once it dams the flow, the creek goes around the ends.
Where this goes wrong
- Sized for an average year. A structure that handles a normal May and drowns in a heavy one wasn’t sized, it was hoped at.
- Abutments set in the bank instead of behind it. Bearing placed where the channel is actively cutting has a finish date.
- Approaches dumped rather than built. One-lift backfill settles for years and the bump gets worse every runoff.
- Salvaged material of unknown capacity. Used beams and flatcar decks can be sound or can be scrap. Nobody should guess.
- Work started in the channel before the permit is in hand. That’s a stop-work order, not a shortcut.
Working in or near live water
Disturbing the bed or banks of a perennial-flowing stream in Montana generally requires a 310 permit through the local conservation district — Park County Conservation District for most of this valley — and depending on the work, review by the Army Corps of Engineers. That application is the landowner’s; the district and the Corps set the conditions. Our part is to build to the approved design, keep disturbance inside what the permit allows, and schedule in-channel work for low water. Irrigation ditches add their own layer: the ditch owner and water users have rights that come first.
How we approach it
We start at the water, not the deck: what comes through in a heavy spring, what the banks have been doing, where the channel has moved, and what has to cross. Once structure type, span, and load are settled, excavation opens the abutment locations back from the channel, footings go on undisturbed bearing, and abutments get backfilled in compacted lifts. Bank faces and the ground below get armored with rock, tied into whatever erosion control the site needs. Framing and decking go on to the load that was named. Then the approaches: compacted fill, crown and ditching so the drainage carries runoff away from the structure, and surfacing that ties the crossing back into the ranch road it serves. Where a crossing is one piece of a bigger access problem, we’d rather build the road and the crossing together than hand off a bridge that connects two ruts.
