Most ranch ponds that disappoint their owners were not dug too small. They leak, or they blow out a bank during runoff. Two questions decide whether a pond works before anyone talks about size: where the water comes from, and whether the ground under it will hold what you put there.
Where the water actually comes from
Ponds on Montana ranch ground are fed one of three ways. A runoff pond catches snowmelt and rain off the drainage above it, which means it fills hard in April and draws down all summer. A spring-fed pond taps a seep or spring and holds a steadier level. A pit pond is dug into a shallow water table on river bottom ground and fills from below.
Which one you have sets the depth you need, the size of the outlet, and how much water is realistically there in a dry August. It also changes the paperwork. In Montana, capturing and impounding surface water generally involves the state water rights process through DNRC, and work in or near a live stream can trigger additional review through your local conservation district and Fish, Wildlife and Parks. Sort that out before dirt moves. A pond built first and permitted second is the expensive version.
Soil decides whether it holds
The valley floor through Emigrant, Pray, and Chico is old river deposit, and coarse gravel and cobble will not hold water no matter how neatly it is shaped. Bench ground and toe slopes often carry more clay and silt. You cannot tell which you have from the surface, so the first real work is test pits at the pond site and along the embankment line.
If the fines are there, the pond can be built out of native material with a core trench keyed into tight ground under the dam. If the material is leaky, options are importing clay, blending in bentonite, a synthetic liner, or moving the pond to better ground. Moving it is often the cheaper answer and the one people resist hearing.
Depth, shape, and winter
A shallow pond in Park County freezes thick, warms fast in summer, and grows cattails on every shelf. Build in a deeper section that keeps liquid water under the ice for stock and holds through evaporation season. Side slopes want to be stable and safe to walk out of, not steep enough to slough.
Plan the livestock connection with the embankment, not after it. A pipe through the fill feeding a gravity tank below the pond keeps cattle off the banks and the water clean.
The spillway is the part that saves the dam
Every impoundment needs somewhere for water to go when it is full. That means a principal outlet and an emergency spillway cut into undisturbed ground, sized for the runoff that drainage can actually produce and set below the top of the embankment. Overtopping is how earth dams come apart. The same logic that governs culverts, ditches, and runoff on rural Montana property applies here, only the consequences of getting it wrong are larger.
Where the spillway discharges matters too. Water dumped onto a raw slope cuts a gully in one season, so the outlet usually needs riprap or slope stabilization and a planned path away from any ranch road below it.
How the work runs, in order
Walk the ground and the drainage above it. Dig test pits. Settle water rights and permits. Strip and stockpile topsoil separately, since it is the only thing that will grow grass later. Excavate the basin and key the core trench. Build the embankment in thin lifts, compacted at the right moisture rather than pushed in loose. Shape and armor the spillway. Respread topsoil, seed, and mulch the bare slopes. Then let it fill and watch the downstream toe for seepage.
What to look for on a pond you already own

Mistakes that cost people twice
Pushing loose spoil into a dam without lifts or compaction. Skipping the spillway because the pond has never been full yet. Siting in the bottom of a live drainage without designing for that drainage at flood. Burying the topsoil. Finishing in fall and leaving bare slopes to meet spring runoff with nothing holding them.
What drives scope and timing
Haul distance if clay has to be imported, rock or hardpan in the excavation, equipment access to the site, the size of the contributing drainage, whether the design is a dug pit or an embankment, liner needs, spillway armoring, and revegetation. Permits carry their own lead time. The build season is short, so early summer through early fall is when this work goes well; frozen ground will not compact.
