If your driveway climbs, sand and cinders are the traction materials that actually hold up out here, and the useful ones get placed on the pitches, the curves, and the approach to the road rather than spread end to end. But the reason a steep drive glazes over again two days after it was treated usually has nothing to do with snowfall. It is water crossing the surface. Ice control keeps the drive usable through a storm; drainage is what shortens the ice season.
Why grade turns ordinary snow into ice
On a flat drive, tires roll across packed snow and mostly keep their grip. On a grade, every vehicle is either braking or climbing, so the tires are constantly shearing against the surface. That shearing polishes packed snow into hard glaze, and it does it fastest in exactly the places you least want it: the steepest pitch, the curve at the bottom, and the flat landing where the drive meets the county road.
Then Paradise Valley’s freeze-thaw pattern takes over. Sun on a south-facing pitch through the middle of the day puts a film of water on the ice; the temperature falls off hard after dark and that film freezes solid. Repeat that daily and you get glare ice built in layers, each one harder and smoother than the packed snow it came from. Aspect matters more than most owners expect. A shaded stretch under conifers or below a north-facing cut bank will hold ice long after the open sections have dried out, and that shaded stretch is usually the one that puts a truck in the borrow ditch.
Sand, cinders, and why salt is the wrong tool here
Sand and cinders work mechanically. Angular particles get pressed into the ice by tire load and stay there, giving the tread something to key against. Cinders have the edge on plain sand because they are sharper and more porous, and because dark material absorbs sunlight and settles slightly into the ice instead of sitting loose on top of it.
Salt works chemically, and its weaknesses show up fast on a rural Montana drive. It loses its bite as temperatures drop, it corrodes vehicles and attacks concrete and mortar, and on gravel it does nothing for traction while softening the surface it lands on. Anything that melts also has to go somewhere, and on a slope that means it runs downhill and refreezes lower down. On a graveled drive, salt tends to move the problem rather than solve it.
How the work actually gets done
Clearing comes first, and on gravel that means clearing to a consistent packed base rather than to bare rock. Operators run shoes or skids so the blade does not scalp the surface and drag your road mix into the ditch, which is what turns a winter of plowing into a spring regravel bill. Once there is a clean, uniform surface, traction material goes onto the grade breaks, the curves, the approach where you have to stop before pulling onto the highway, and the turnaround or parking area where people are walking. Then it gets repeated after the next storm, because the plow takes the treated layer with it.

The permanent fix is usually water, not sand
No amount of traction material keeps up with a spring, a ditch overflow, or a plugged inlet that re-wets the same twenty feet of driveway every afternoon. Sometimes the answer is culvert installation or repair so the water passes under the drive; sometimes it is a swale or an intercept ditch above the grade; often it is simply regrading so the driveway sheds water instead of collecting it.
Surface condition is the other half. A drive that is dished, rutted, or has lost its crown holds water in the wheel tracks, freezes those tracks into ribs, and is harder to plow clean all winter. What drives scope and timing
Length and steepness matter, but so do the number of grade breaks and curves needing treatment, how far material has to be hauled in, whether there is room to turn a truck around at the top, and whether the surface or drainage needs work before ice control is worth doing at all. Access is the quiet one: a narrow drive with tight trees and no turnaround takes longer per pass than a wider one twice its length.
Timing follows the season. Fall is when regrading, crowning, culvert cleanout, and edge marking should happen, before the ground freezes and before the first storm hides everything. Winter is when clearing and traction stay on a schedule, which is the argument for a seasonal snow plowing contract rather than calling after the drive is already glazed. Spring is for sweeping up grit on hard surfaces and regrading whatever the winter chewed up.
